ASEZ Tree Planting at Piñones Beach in Puerto Rico

On Sunday, July 27, 2025, 100 ASEZ volunteers gathered at Piñones Beach in Loíza, Puerto Rico. Together, they planted 207 native trees—200 red mangroves, 5 palms, and 2 sea bean trees. These species were chosen for their strength in protecting the coastline. They also store “blue carbon,” which is central to ASEZ’s Blue Carbon Campaign.

Guided by environmental experts from Estuario, volunteers learned the value of mangroves and other native species. Mangroves reduce erosion, soften storm impacts, and provide shelter for fish and marine life. As a result, each seedling planted strengthened Puerto Rico’s ability to withstand hurricanes and other climate threats.

Inspiring Youth Leadership and Community Action

“It feels amazing to know that something we planted today will protect us tomorrow,” said Valeria Carbonell, one of the volunteers.

Andreina Alexatos, a leader from Estuario, reminded participants of the long-term goal: “This is a coastal resilience project to help prepare our shores for when impacts come—whether from hurricanes or any kind of disturbance—while everything is still calm.”

This tree planting event shows how community-led efforts can create lasting change. By restoring the shoreline with native trees, ASEZ and Estuario are helping build a more resilient Puerto Rico.
