The World Mission Society Church of God received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2016. To celebrate, volunteers are committing themselves to serve the community even more in 2017. The Church of God in Boston began the year, bringing energetic performances and bright smiles to the Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Up until the morning of January 29, volunteers put great efforts into preparing entertainment for the residents at Southgate. They arrived beaming with excitement to put on a spectacular show. As the performance room filled up with the seniors, the volunteers greeted them warmly. Instantly, the residents felt the love coming from the members.
The emcee began the event giving sincere thanks to all in attendance. He introduced the first round of acts, consisting of lively dance numbers from the ’50s and ’60s. The audience members were filled with delight as each performance brought back joyful memories of their younger days.
Next, the host tested the residents’ memories with a game. The volunteers played snippets of classic songs and movie lines for a few seconds and the residents tried to guess the song. This gave just enough time for the audience to excitedly exclaim “I know this one!” or “I love this song!”
To conclude the entertainment, the performers tugged on the heartstrings of the residents through charming renditions of timeless love songs like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley and “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder.
By the end of the event, the residents were in want of more as a result of all the nostalgic performances. “Please come back soon!” they pleaded. The smiles and laughter shared at the Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will not soon be forgotten. Furthermore, the Church of God in Boston will continue spreading the love of Heavenly Mother through more community events like this in the near future.
