ASEZ Members Receive Certification through NYS Citizen Preparedness Training
To be ready in the face of a disaster, ASEZ held a New York State Citizen Preparedness Training in partnership with the National Guard. ASEZ (Save the Earth from A to Z) is an international volunteer group consisting of university students.
To address pressing needs in communities around the world, ASEZ holds volunteer efforts such as cleanups and social services. ASEZ members have carried out the “Mother’s Street” cleanup movement in about 8,000 locations around the world. Moreover, they launched the “Reduce Crime Together” initiative to combat criminal activity through cleaning their neighborhoods.
In addition to all of this, ASEZ members hosted the Citizens Preparedness Training for the first time at Lehman College in the Bronx, NY. The ASEZ members kicked things off by introducing the crime reduction movement, explaining the importance of students and local residents joining the movement.
Lady Arias, an ASEZ member, said, “We hope that through this event, students can be more aware and prepared on what to do in the case of a disaster, and at the end, this could help save lives.”
Becoming Aware Citizens and Setting the Example
After the opening remarks, National Guard members presented a multimedia slideshow showing how to prepare emergency supplies. Furthermore, they went on to explain what to do in the event of a catastrophe, such as an active shooter. About 250 participants attentively listened to the presentation.
“Today I met your volunteers for the first time, and they are very engaging,” said Kevin Dellner, the Fire Inspector for the Office of Fire Prevention Control of New York State. “I liked the fact that they are aware of their surroundings and they are driven. People like them make the world a better place.”
After the presentation, Dr. Plummer, a general surgeon and alumnus, spoke encouraging words to the audience. “You can serve as role models for your neighbors, cleaning the community and letting them have some pride,” he told the ASEZ volunteers.
At the end, the participants received a certificate of completion and a complimentary emergency backpack kit. The attendees commented that they felt much more confident and ready to take the correct action in the case of a disaster.
