Bergen County Senior Picnic 2013

Every year, Bergen County and the Board of Chosen Freeholders hold the Bergen County Senior Picnic for nearly 3,000 senior citizens. To share the love of God with the people who built today’s society through their hard work and sacrifice, more than fifty yellow-shirt volunteers from the World Mission Society Church of God went to assist at the event.

Volunteers were responsible for welcoming seniors and staff with uplifting cheers, delivering lunches and maintaining park facilities. Church of God members spared no efforts to make the seniors feel comfortable, taken care of well and at ease. Senior citizens were extremely pleased with the volunteers, who took time to converse and get to know them.

Organizers of the Bergen County Senior Picnic were also delighted with the devotional service of the Church of God members.“A lot of people talk the talk, but not many walk the walk. You guys are the epitome,” said John Mitchell, Freeholder of Bergen County.

As the picnic drew to a close, everyone received a pleasant surprise when New Jersey Governor Chris Christie made a special appearance. Governor Christie stopped by to share a few words with the Bergen County residents. And after seeing the dozens of Church of God volunteers in the crowd, the Governor recognized them and expressed his appreciation for the work they did following Hurricane Sandy.

“Those folks in the yellow shirts were a Godsend,” commented Governor Christie, remembering the hundreds of volunteers from the Church of God that responded to the signal of help in Ridgewood, Toms River, Hoboken and other locations in New Jersey and the tri-state area.

“Our hope is that through these efforts, seniors everywhere will feel the love of God and feel as though their own children were serving them,” said one Church volunteer. “We want the whole world to feel the great love of Heavenly Mother!”
