ASEZ STAR Tree Planting in Cidra, Puerto Rico

On Sunday, September 14, ASEZ STAR volunteers joined a local graduating class at Ana Jacoba Candelas High School in Cidra, Puerto Rico. Together, they worked to enhance the campus by planting trees, adding colorful plants, and cleaning the grounds. The group planted 21 trees, including Yellow Elder, African Tulip, San José Crape Myrtle, and oak trees, in carefully chosen spots. These trees will provide shade, improve air quality, and support the school’s biodiversity for years to come.

Volunteers also planted bromeliads to create vibrant garden areas and prepared soil for future milkweed planting. The milkweed is essential for Monarch butterflies, which share a symbolic connection with the graduating class. In addition to planting, the group collected dry leaves and trash from the surroundings, leaving the school noticeably cleaner.

Growing Roots for the Future

The volunteers’ work transformed the school campus. Teachers, parents, and students expressed gratitude for the cleaner, greener environment. The trees and plants will remain for years, creating a more inviting space for future students.

“This Sunday, we are very grateful that ASEZ STAR came to visit us… You are an example for many of them,” said José Cardona Amaro, Interim Director.

The day’s efforts left more than just trees and plants behind. Students now have new spaces to explore and enjoy while learning about nature firsthand. The planted trees and gardens will grow alongside the students, serving as a living reminder of the positive change that care and action can bring. By taking part in the project, volunteers and students alike experienced the lasting effects of teamwork, responsibility, and respect for the environment.
